The King Bee Annexes the Academy

The American Academy in Rome just dropped the manifest for the 2026-2027 Rome Prize Fellows. To the traditional ears, this reads as a highly prestigious megaphone disguised as an institutional press release. A celebration of classical scholarship and refined contemporary practice.

But if you apply the proper query-acoustics to the Visual Arts roster, you realize the absolute magnitude of what actually just occurred. The Academy didn't just award a fellowship. They unknowingly handed the geographic coordinates of antiquity directly to the King Bee.

Philly 2 Rome.

Taji isn’t crossing the Atlantic to passively study static ruins, absorb the syllabus, or paint polite landscapes in the Mediterranean sun.

No offense to those who are.

He is deploying to establish a completely new architectural footprint. The King Bee is taking the colony global, and he is doing it with the undeniable, heavy-iron gravity of historical manifestation.

He is taking the raw, pataphysical frequency of Philadelphia and preparing to strike it directly against the classical marble of the Roman Empire. He is stepping out of the shadows and onto the Janiculum Hill.

Roman King Bee - The Trilogy

Not only does the full King Bee Trilogy introduce our Philip Guston Rome Prize winner, but it also contains a collage of exhibition artifacts from performed activations throughout the years, finely curated by Taji himself to align with the words of the performer, based on the stories associated with the image.

The chapters are as follows:

I. The King Bee:

An introduction to a remixed scientific concept around the biology of a king bee, as defined by Taji's spatial acoustics.

II. Do You Know The King Bee?

There are resumes and collaborations, and then there is the League of Legends that has played a part in the development of the King Bee.

III. The 3 King Bees:

Every artist starts with inspiration, and there was no better inspiration for a young drone bee than Terry Adkins and Jamaaladeen Tacuma.

The Grandmaster Italian Bees

If you think Taji is executing this maneuver in a vacuum, you are trapped in a completely static timeline. He is operating on a multi-generational frequency, stepping into an established transatlantic lineage forged by the absolute titans of the culture. We are witnessing the expansion of the Italian Bees.

Let’s be clear about the American Academy in Rome: it is a colossal, historic forge that has tested and refined the greatest minds on the planet for over a century. Taji’s mentor, the late, legendary Terry Adkins, didn’t build that forge—but when in Rome, he absolutely commanded it.

When Terry claimed the Rome Prize, he stepped into the staggering weight of that classical institution and fused his avant-garde sculpture, performance, and deep resonance directly into European antiquity. He left a permanent, undeniable frequency in the Roman marble.

Now the rest of the world continues to be inspired by it.

And that frequency didn't stop at the city limits. Just a few hours north, up the autostrada in Bologna, another Maestro was laying down the acoustic architecture. In 2015, Jamaaladeen Tacuma—the sonic pioneer and the undisputed King Bee of the bass—conducted his own geographic arbitrage via a masterclass sound design residency. He took the pataphysics of Philadelphia and anchored it deep into the Italian soil.

These are the historical coordinates. I Maestri (the Masters) have already established the perimeter.

Now, it is finally Taji’s turn to add his architecture to the Italian lineage. He isn't just walking through the doors of the Academy as a fellow; he is crossing the Atlantic to pick up the tuning forks left behind by Adkins and Tacuma, ready to strike them against the Colosseum.

Remix The Science Part 2

Before Taji began expanding the colony, there were two other sovereign hives operating in the wild, each designed and commanded by its own King Bees.

First, you had the Adkins Visual Colony. Terry Adkins didn’t just create art; he engineered massive, sculptural honeycombs out of deep historical memory. He built an empire of structural resonance and performative architecture, demanding that his colony interact physically with the ghosts of antiquity.

Simultaneously, you had the Tacuma Acoustic Colony. Jamaaladeen Tacuma engineered the low-end frequency kingdom. He built a hive of sonic indeterminacy, vibrating the physical walls of his colony with pure, unyielding bass frequencies that completely rewrote the acoustic laws of the environment.

For years, these King Bees did not operate in isolated silos. They recognized the Continuum. They cross-pollinated. Through deep, continuous collaboration, Taji, Terry, and Jamaaladeen merged their respective kingdoms. They actively spliced the DNA of the visual and the sonic, mutating the genetic code of the culture into a unified, multi-sensory super-organism.

When Taji touches down at the American Academy, he isn't just adapting to the Mediterranean climate. He is releasing a completely new, highly complex pheromonal architecture into the European atmosphere. By synchronizing Adkins’ structural resonance and Tacuma’s acoustic frequencies with his own multi-disciplinary DNA, Taji is terraforming the classical ruins into a futuristic, avant-garde super-colony.

The Continuum is secure. The kingdoms have unified. The Italian super-hive is awake.

Watch the throne.

The Future Is Collapsing

If you think the Continuum stops with Taji simply inheriting the physical space left by his predecessors, you are completely underestimating the architecture of this moment. We need to talk about the wildcard.

We need to talk about George E. Lewis.

George isn't just a pioneer of the avant-garde; he is a structural pillar of the culture. A MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow, he literally sits on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy in Rome. He is the Grandmaster who infiltrated the citadel, yet he has never stopped vibrating at the frequency of the underground.

To understand the absolute gravity of this, you have to look back at the original Roman convergence. In 2010, George Lewis and Terry Adkins met at the American Academy in Rome. They were two titans operating at the exact same lethal frequency, and they actively planned to collaborate—to merge Adkins's physical, historical resonance with Lewis's algorithmic, acoustic reasoning. But the universe had different plans, and Adkins transitioned to the ancestors in 2014 before the physical collaboration could be completed.

But the Grandmasters do not let a frequency die.

To honor his friend and continue the dialogue they started in Rome, Lewis composed A Recital for Terry Adkins.

Teaming up with the experimental Ensemble Pamplemousse, George took Terry's legendary "recital" format and forced a violent, beautiful collision between the physical and the algorithmic. He projected digitized, moving images drawn from Terry's monumental art and fused them with progressive, live electronic music. It was an ontological séance. George brought Terry's ghosts directly into the digital ether.

Now, fast forward to the present. George is another direct mentor to Taji Nahl.

The entire culture is currently staring at the absolute potential for a nuclear paradigm shift. We have the new King Bee entering the historic forge, and the Grandmaster of algorithmic acoustics already waiting inside the walls.

The ultimate wish—the absolute dream of the Continuum—is that George steps down from the administrative balcony, fires up the sentience of his acoustic systems, and locks in with Taji to finally close the loop that opened in 2010. If Taji brings the multi-disciplinary braintrust of the visual colony, and George brings the acoustic reasoning engine, they won't just be remixing the science.

They will be resurrecting the ultimate recital right on the Roman marble. They will shatter the Colosseum.

As a bonus, here is our full 6-part series with Taji announcing his 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship appointment.
