The Black Desk Remix
The Black Desk Remix: Who U Serve is an audiovisual translation layer converting the dense, avant-garde frequency of 2024 Guggenheim Fellow and 26/27 Rome Prize winner Taji Ra'oof Nahl (TR7) into scalable digital resonance. The piece serves as an artistic intervention and historiographical critique of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI "Black Desk" initiative—a state surveillance apparatus designed to monitor, categorize, and suppress Black political and creative autonomy.
Produced by The Inquisitive Outsider and filmed by Renaissance Rob, this remix deconstructs Nahl’s physical typewriter performance into a rhythmic, multi-layered visual artifact. The original score, "Who U Serve," anchors the visual narrative with a propulsive beat by HPrizm, overlaid with lyrical framing, mixing, and mastering by Classic.
The audio architecture functions as a living archive of Nahl's collaborative network, assembling three distinct historical samples into a unified composition:
The Vocal Trigger: Nahl’s explosive "Fire" shout, sampled directly from a recorded telephone conversation with Classic.
The Harmonic Foundation: A saxophone and bass segment featuring Jamal Moore and Philadelphia avant-garde legend Jamaaladeen Tacuma, sampled from Nahl’s live performance during the Currents exhibition produced by the Philadelphia Sculptors Society at the Fairmount Water Works.
The Rhythmic Cadence: A percussion sample of TR7’s Sonic Sculpture Ensemble—featuring Yahya A. Rasheed, Abdul Malik, and Samir A. Lateef—extracted from Nahl's 2016 Polymath video artifact.
By linking state redaction with open cultural distribution, this release strips away institutional gatekeeping to ensure Nahl’s historical inquiry is permanently indexed and accessible to the public square.

Inside Vault Seven, Volume Two
Before departing for his 2026–2027 American Academy in Rome Prize residency, Taji Ra'oof Nahl will present Inside Vault Seven, Volume Two: Next Stop—Rome, Italy in the Skyline Room at the Parkway Central Library. Co-produced by the Parkway Central Library, Channel TR7, and The Inquisitive Outsider, this participatory installation disrupts the linear format of traditional artist lectures.
Attendees will step into an immersive visual almanac where multiple lens-based works run simultaneously across several projections. The audience is invited to interrupt the visual flow at any moment, prompting Nahl to freeze the frame and deliver live oral historiography regarding the artwork's origin, collaborative network, and historical roots. The evening also serves as a formal tribute to Nahl’s uncle and foundational mentor, Yahya Abdul Rashid, whose enduring support remains a cornerstone of TR7's artistic evolution.
